Supervisor Peggy Romo West’s statement on ICE Resolution

May 24, 2012

Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy A. Romo West is thanking her colleagues for adopting Milwaukee County policy in reference to honoring detainer requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I would like to express my thanks to the fourteen Supervisors who voted for the ICE Detainer Resolution at today’s County Board meeting,” Supervisor Romo West said.  “I also appreciate all of the support we have received from the many groups that helped push this issue forward, including Voces de la Frontera, Equality Wisconsin, MICAH, & the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals.”

The adopted resolution details that Immigration detainer requests from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement shall be honored only if the subject of the request:

•        Has been convicted of at least one felony or two misdemeanor offenses
•        Has been convicted or charged with any domestic violence offense or any violation of a protective order
•        Has been convicted or charged with intoxicated use of a vehicle
•        Is a defendant in a pending criminal case, has an outstanding criminal warrant, or is an identified gang member
•        Is a possible match on the US terrorist watch list

The resolution goes on to request that, to the extent allowed by law, the Milwaukee County Sheriff adopt the directed County policy.
