Parents for Bay View Schools
The Parents For Bay View Schools Organization is dedicated to working with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) to discuss options for schools in our community. Our initial goal is to engage interested parents to better understand the current state of education in Bay View and to help outline a plan for the future of our schools.
Get an update on plans for Bay View High School THIS Sunday and help us prepare for a big meetup in Bay View with the Superintendent – we can use your help and planning assistance to gain neighborhood support! Big stuff happening fast – MPS School Board Director Meagan Holman will make remarks and bring us up to speed, followed by a planning session with opportunities to get involved. Out in time for dinner! Share the event and come if you want to take some action to help out.
Milwaukee’s Silver City Asian Festival tomorrow, Aug. 27

Asian Fest celebrates the diverse cultures of the world’s most intriguing continent. From Bollywood to Beijing festival goers can experience the music, dance, and songs of Milwaukee’s diverse Asian population.
Along with food and performances, this year’s festival will feature some new attractions. There will be an expanded family area that will include a petting zoo and other activities for kids. North Shore Bank is sponsoring a basketball tournament to be held on the recently opened “sport court” at the Silver City Town Homes adjacent to Arlington Heights Park.
Asian Fest is an initiative of the Silver City Business District along with Layton Boulevard West Neighbors (LBWN) and is sponsored by local organizations and businesses.
Milwaukee Public Library invites public input about three finalists’ designs for new East Library branch

The city has selected three possible designs for the new East Libary on North Avenue and has invited the public to comment on the designs November 9 at the meeting of the MPL Board of Trustees Building & Development Committee when the finalists will make their presentations. Milwaukee Public Library news—Laptop program launched at six branches; better wifi, too

A grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administrations (NTIA) with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has permitted Milwaukee Public Library to add 40 laptop computers at each of six of its locations, and to hire six library technology specialists to help customers learn new and polish current computer skills.
MPL was one of several Milwaukee-area agencies that applied for the BTOP grant as part of the City’s “Connecting Milwaukee Communities” Project (CMC). The library received $1.4 million of the total $2.5 million grant.
Laptops are available for checkout to use in the libraries at:
- Atkinson Library, 1960 W. Atkinson Ave.
- Center Street Library, 2727 W. Fond du Lac Ave.
- Forest Home Library, 1432 W. Forest Home Ave.
- Martin Luther King Library, 310 W. Locust St.
- Villard Avenue Library, 3310 W. Villard Ave.
- Washington Park Library, 2121 N. Sherman Blvd.
Additionally, a technology specialist was hired at each of the six locations to provide training opportunities on laptop and desktop computers at the libraries. Four of the six locations offer bi-lingual (Spanish) assistance – Forest Home, Martin Luther King, Villard Avenue, and Washington Park branches.
Those who wish to learn to use the popular Apple software or operating system will be disappointed: MPL opted to invest only in Windows-based laptops and software.
Users need to have a valid library card in order to check out the computers.
In addition, MPL’s broadband wireless Internet access has been upgraded in all 13 locations to provide better and faster service.
Jeff Plale appointed Wisconsin Commissioner of Railroads by Governor Walker

Governor Scott Walker announced the appointment of former Democrat State Senator Jeff Plale as Wisconsin’s next Commissioner of Railroads today.
“Jeff Plale’s distinguished record of public service and experience, both as a state legislator and as a state administrator, make him an excellent choice to serve as Railroad Commissioner,” Governor Walker said. “He will work hard to maintain a strong rail infrastructure, which will help the private sector create jobs in Wisconsin.”
During Plale’s tenure in the Wisconsin State Senate, he represented a legislative district with multiple rail lines and businesses that relied heavily on rail service, chaired the Senate Committee on Commerce, Utilities, Energy, and Rail and served on both the Senate and Assembly Transportation Committees.
“As Commissioner of Railroads, I will improve rail infrastructure and safety,” Jeff Plale said. “I understand the importance of a comprehensive transportation infrastructure and the profound impact that rail has on commerce and job creation. I thank Governor Walker for calling on me to continue to serve Wisconsin and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
The Commissioner of Railroads’ primary responsibility is to make determinations about the adequacy of warning devices at railroad crossings, along with other railroad related regulations, which include: Installation of new highway/rail crossings Alteration of existing crossings Closing or consolidating existing crossings Repair of rough crossings Determining adequate railroad fences Exemptions from railroad track clearance laws The Commissioner of Railroads serves a six year term expiring on March 1 of an odd-numbered year.
Plale’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Wisconsin State Senate.
Dedication of “Raymond Dietrich Auditorium” at BVHS, Aug. 24, 5:30pm

The Bay View High School Alumni organization is presenting a dedication ceremony Wed., Aug. 24, 5:30pm in the foyer of the Bay View High Auditorium. The school’s auditorium is being named the “Raymond Dietrich Auditorium” in honor of the beloved music instructor and director who served Bay View High School from 1949-1984. Mr. Dietrich will be at the ceremony where a placque and name plate will be place above the auditorium door.
Cake will be served after the ceremony.
Attendees will be able to purchase CDs and DVDs of the BVHS 2011 Spring Concert at the dedication.

Bay View High School is honoring its beloved longtime concert choir teacher by naming its auditorium after him. The school’s governance council voted to name it the Raymond Dietrich Auditorium.
“There have been many great teachers at Bay View but none who has had an effect on his students like Mr. Dietrich,” recalled Sonia Hass, Class of 1977 and president of the Bay View Alumni Association. “He pushed his students to play the best and sing the best and his results speak for himself.”
The honor was revealed at the May 25 alumni concert, which Dietrich, 84, directed. It was a happy surprise to him then.
“Wow! I was just so flabbergasted by it,” he told the Compass. “I taught for many years and even went to school there. To get such an honor was…oh boy…great.”

Economic development forum focused on South Shore Sep. 7

Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik along with the mayors of the South Shore communities, St. Francis Mayor Al Richards, Cudahy Mayor Tony Day, South Milwaukee Mayor Thomas Zepecki and Oak Creek Mayor Richard Bolender, are sponsoring a unique, one-stop forum for constituents and the development community to hear from economic development staff and the Community Development Authorities (CDA) of each city regarding the economic development plans taking place throughout the South Shore. The Forum will also include Tom Rave, Executive Director of The Gateway to Milwaukee.
This forum will highlight the dynamic plans formulated by the CDAs with the leadership of their city councils and mayors. Jursik will provide updates on the Hoan Bridge, 794 Lake Parkway extension planning, lakefront development and College Avenue repair. The Aerotropolis concept will also be explained. Additionally, each city will staff booths displaying aerial maps, mock-ups, elevations and planning materials of current or planned projects for public viewing and inquiries in an open-house setting.

Dear Neighbor,
Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, I am hosting another neighborhood meeting on the Hoan Bridge reconstruction project with Sen. Chris Larson, Rep. Christine Sinicki, and state transportation officials. This meeting is devoted solely to talking about a possible Hoan Bridge bicycle lane. It will be held in the Beulah Brinton Cafeteria Room, 2555 South Bay Street in Bay View.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is currently studying the feasibility of adding a bicycle lane to the Hoan Bridge. DOT expects to complete its study sometime this fall, so now is the time to make your voice heard if you have an opinion about biking the Hoan.
Our Aug. 23 meeting at Beulah Brinton will provide you with an excellent opportunity to learn more about the DOT bike lane study and to let state transportation officials know how you feel about adding a bike lane to the Hoan Bridge. I hope to see you there!
The DOT has also set up a website devoted to the Hoan Bridge project where you can find the latest information on the project here.
