City Given No Choice: Will Have to Lobby Against UWM Preferred Wauwatosa Site for College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Appearing Before Council, Chancellor Says “No” to Possible Downtown Locations

The City of Milwaukee will have no option other than lobbying against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s plan for locating the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in Wauwatosa, according to Alderman Robert J. Bauman.

That stance comes after UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago responded with a direct and unequivocal “no” when asked by Alderman Bauman during Wednesday’s meeting of the Common Council whether UWM was amenable to locating the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in downtown Milwaukee.

Alderman Bauman said, “The chancellor’s “unequivocal position” is in direct conflict with a resolution approved by the Common Council and signed by the mayor (File #081213, approved on January 16, 2009) which directs city officials to lobby state officials in favor of a downtown location for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. We would have preferred to work with the university to find a suitable location in downtown Milwaukee for the engineering school; however, the chancellor’s intransigence appears to foreclose the possibility of cooperation and collaboration.”
