Humboldt Park Beer & Wine
February 26, 2009
Philip Markey opened a beer and wine store below his residence at 3155 S. Howell Ave. in December 2008. The property had been a beer depot since the 1960s. Markey bought the business in 1989 and operated it on premises until 1993, when he moved to Pick ‘n Save to sell beer and liquor. He received a Class “A” Liquor & Malt license for the business in 2007, but did not activate it until opening the store in December. District 14 Alderman Tony Zielinski said Markey pledged on his honor as a Marine that he would not sell liquor-just beer and wine. Markey said he read a statement to this effect before the Common Council, but is reconsidering if he can make a living selling beer and wine without also selling liquor. He and his Chesapeake Bay Retriever Buddy mind the store during the cold months; Markey drives a dump truck during the summer. Markey rehabbed the interior of the business and also sells used books, cigars, and cigarettes. A sign for the front yard is expected soon. Humboldt Park Beer & Wine’s hours are Monday-Friday, 2-9pm; Saturday, 11am-9pm; and Sunday, 11am-5pm. (414) 489-7708.
