Limited Reinstatement of Media Holds Service to Begin February 16, 2009

The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) announced today that its media holds policy in
effect since January 2, 2008 has been revised as follows:

• MPL will reinstate the media holds service at five (5) locations: Central, Bay View, Capitol,
Center Street, and East libraries.
• Unique media items located at any of the other eight (8) MPL locations will also be made
holdable, making all titles - but not all copies of each title - holdable.
• Items held will be delivered to any location within the Milwaukee County Federated Library
System (MCFLS) using the MPL or MCFLS delivery system as the library patron requests.
• The number of holds per patron has been lowered to 15 from 20 to help ensure that a large
number of titles/copies remain in general circulation.

As part of the 2008 budget, MPL adopted a media holds policy change where patrons could no longer
place holds on MPL-owned DVDs, music CDs, and videocassettes in the young adult and adult
collections.

MPL is able to reinstate the media holds service in 2009 with the limitations stated above because of the
reduced number of items to be held, as well as other operational efficiencies.

Please note that this media holds policy affects Milwaukee Public Library-owned media materials only.

The 2009 MPL media holds policy takes effect on Monday, February 16, 2009.
