Poet & musician Saul Williams to speak at UWM Feb. 25

Poet, musician and actor Saul Williams brings his unusual blend of poetry and alternative hip-hop to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The lecture and performance, part of UWM’s Distinguished Lecture Series, begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Union Wisconsin Room, second floor, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd. Haiti’s youngest rising music star and guitarist, Rosemond Jolissaint, opens the event.

Williams, who debuted in the lead role of the 1998 independent film “Slam,” continues to explore social consciousness through his work.

He has since released several spoken-word CDs, including “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust” (2007), and has authored four books of poetry: “The Seventh Octave,” “She,” “Said the Shotgun to the Head” and “The Dead Emcee Scrolls: The Lost Teachings of Hip Hop.”

A reception and book signing will follow the event.

Advance tickets are free for UWM students (with student ID); $5 non-UWM students; $8 faculty, staff, alumni; $10 general public. At the door, tickets will be $8 non-UWM students; $10 faculty, staff, alumni; $12 general public. UWM students may receive one free ticket (while available) at the door with their student ID.
