Presented by the East Town and Historic Third Ward associations, the 22-year-old Gallery Night and Day is the premier art event in Milwaukee for both the experienced art connoisseur and most beginning admirer. An evening of gallery hopping and art viewing begins Friday, April 16 and continues during the day on Saturday, April 17. This April, the quarterly event showcases 66 venues throughout the downtown Milwaukee area. Admission is free to all venues during event hours listed below.Gallery Night and Day also features free parking in the Historic Third Ward parking structures located at 212 N. Milwaukee St. and 225 E. Chicago St. Catch the free Friday Gallery Night Xpress and enjoy a new six-stop route which will take you from the Third Ward to East Town and back. The 20-passenger bus makes a continuous loop from 5 to 9pm Friday with stops approximately every 15 minutes.
The participants in April’s Gallery Night and Day are:
1) CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY – NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL ART GALLERY – (6801 N. Yates – 414.410.4105 – www.stritch.edu) Graduating B.A. and B.F.A. candidates exhibit photography, video, sculpture and paintings. Exhibition April 16 through 25. Gallery Night events also include live music performed by the Stritch student chamber ensemble and a food and wine reception. At 7:30pm, the Stritch Theater department’s production of “The Comedy of Errors” will be presented in the Nancy Kendall Theater.Friday: 5:30 to 8:30pm

Working to elevate the visibility and prestige of Wisconsin art and artists, the Charles Allis Art Museum is pleased to present Forward: A Survey of Wisconsin Art Now, a juried exhibition of original works by Wisconsin artists. 3) DEAN JENSEN GALLERY – (759 N. Water St. – 414.278.7100 – www.deanjensengallery.com) Re: Current: New Work by Sonja Thomsen. The gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Sonja Thomsen, a Milwaukee photographer whose work has been shown widely throughout the United States as well as abroad. Thomsen describes her newest body of work as an exploration of cyclical time. Through photography and installation, she says, she intends for her work to engage the relationship between “instant and existence.” Much of the exhibition’s work was produced at the Hermitage Artist Retreat on the Manasota Key in Florida where Thomsen was an artist in residence in 2008. 4) DeLIND GALLERY OF FINE ART – (450 E. Mason St. – 414.271.8525 – www.delindgallery.com)Carl Von Marr Selected Drawings and Other Treasures From Our Vault. Marr needs little introduction. Born in Milwaukee, his parents sent their talented son to Germany to study art in 1875. His discipline had him figure drawing every day, and eventually he became a teacher at the Royal Academy in Munich. Among his many honors were an honorary Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Knighthood bestowed by the King of Bavaria, and many gold medals for his paintings. Innovative and insightful, MIAD’s Senior Thesis Exhibitions offer a glimpse of the next generation of artists and designers. 7) PECK SCHOOL OF THE ARTS – UW-MILWAUKEE INSTITUTE OF VISUAL ARTS (INOVA) – (2155 N. Prospect Ave. – 414.229.5070 – www.arts.uwm.edu/inova) Last chance to see Spatial City: An Architecture of Idealism before it travels to Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The exhibit, the first in the United States of work drawn from France’s network of Regional Contemporary Art Funds, was inspired by the work of theoretical architect Yona Friedman and includes an international slate of artists including Lida Abdul, Monica Bonvicini, Jimmie Durham, Cao Fei, Mark Leckey, François Morellet, Sarah Morris, Tatiana Trouvé and Stephen Wetzel.
