Pinched by economy, helpers need our help

November 27, 2008

By Jeff Plale, 7th District State Senator

The holiday season is a busy and hectic time of year. Often, the true spirit of the season can become lost in the hustle and bustle of shopping and shoveling. As December is now upon us, I wanted to remind you about several opportunities we have to give back to our community. While this is a time when we reach out to our friends and family, it is important to also lend a helping hand to those in our community who need it most. Unfortunately, this struggle is felt more acutely during the holiday season, especially during the tough economic climate our nation is currently facing.

As more families seek help, organizations who provide for those in need feel an extra squeeze on their limited resources. While we are all affected by the recent downturn in our economy, I urge you to do what you can to give back to the community during these trying times. There are a number of volunteer organizations in the area who are always looking for another set of hands. Some of these include United Way, Volunteer Center of Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Christian Center. As food prices have skyrocketed across the country, food pantries’ supplies are down and they are forced to turn people away. The situation right here in the Milwaukee area is just as dire. There are a number of organizations in need of our contributions. These include Second Harvest, UMOS Food Pantry, and the Hunger Task Force. Additionally, a number of local parishes have food pantries likely in need of donations. Any contribution you are able to offer is greatly appreciated.

Furthermore, as the temperatures dip in the coming months, energy costs rise and budgets are stretched even thinner. If you or someone you know needs assistance with energy bills, help is available. The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) administers the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). In addition to heating and energy assistance, WHEAP provides a number of other services including counseling for energy conservation and emergency furnace repair and replacement. For more information on WHEAP call 1-866-HEATWIS (432-8947).
