Remember Doc Brown’s garbage-powered DeLorean in Back to the Future? We may not yet be able to power a nuclear reaction with a banana peel, but there’s a growing local movement to convert organic waste into a resource.

The newly organized Milwaukee Community Compost Network hosted a Leaf Blitz on the do’s and don’ts of composting Saturday, Nov. 21 behind Sweet Water Organics, 2151 S. Robinson Ave. in Bay View, which uses worm castings from its compost to provide nutrients for its plants. For a $15 donation or a bag of leaves, about 50 attendees received a hands-on composting demonstration by master composters Joe Hill and Josh Knox. The city of Milwaukee recycling program endorsed the effort.

The Milwaukee Community Compost Network ultimately aims to use local vegetable and fruit scraps to create soil for Milwaukee’s urban farming community, converting organic waste into a resource instead of dumping it in landfills.
