What’s new at Humboldt Park

August 29, 2008

By Chris Larson, District 14 County Supervisor

One of Milwaukee County’s first parks is undergoing some exciting changes.

You might have noticed the great improvements we’ve made near the Humboldt Park Lagoon. Native plants and rock walkouts were added to keep the shoreline from eroding and to control the goose population. This pilot project from the parks engineer is a great alternative to the more expensive dredging and rebuilding of shoreline.

The algae and cattails are also growing problems that we seek to reduce. Coming up Nov. 8 at 10am, I welcome you to join the Humboldt Park Watch group and me as we cut down the invasive cattails before the winter freeze. This is our best chance to prevent them from spreading any farther come next spring. Bring waders if you have them.

As Chill has become a popular hangout for neighbors on Tuesday nights, local restaurants have unfortunately seen a dip in customers.

The Chill on the Hill concert series has ended for the year and we thank Bay View Neighborhood Association for another successful summer, and we eagerly wait for its return next year. As Chill has become a popular hangout for neighbors on Tuesday nights, local restaurants have unfortunately seen a dip in customers. In an effort to bridge this gap, I am working with the group to identify additional local vendors to add to the current park concession stand around the bandshell for 2009. We hope to offer a wider variety of food for music lovers while ensuring our favorite restaurants can take part in the fun, too.

In the meantime, Alverno’s Global Union world music and culture festival will hit Humboldt Sept. 13-14. The two-day festival is free and will feature eight bands, food, and merchandise from noon to 7pm. Bring a blanket and your friends as you take in music from India, Mali, Brazil, Russia, Iran, the Congo, and Cuba. See you there!
