Public meeting: Meagan Holman: BVMHS “future reconfiguration” as possible SpringBoard school

May 2, 2012

School Board Director Meagan Holman will host a community meeting May 3 to discuss the future configuration of Milwaukee Public Schools’ Bay View Middle and High School, which has been identified as a possible site for the College Board’s SpringBoard college prep program.

A representative from the College Board is set to make a presentation at the meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the school, 2751 S. Lenox Street, Milwaukee 53207.

MPS’ proposed 2012-13 budget includes funding to bring SpringBoard to up to five schools in the district.

“The community has been deeply engaged in the process of transforming the school and this is the next step,” said Holman, who represents the city’s Bay View neighborhood and surrounding communities. “But community members need to be there to see the proposal and weigh in.”

The meeting is co-sponsored by Ald. Tony Zielinski and Parents for Bay View Schools, a community group. Milwaukee Recreation will provide free childcare to parents attending the meeting.

MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton said he’s pleased to see families and community members get involved.

“Family and community involvement is absolutely critical to our success as a school system,” Dr. Thornton said.
