Milwaukee Lake Band 60th reunion planned

April 30, 2012

Milwaukee Lake Band alumni are planning a 60th Reunion event June 30 that will include an on-field standing concert exhibition at Greendale High School. The reunion concert is part of the MACBDA (Mid-American Competing Band Directors Association) Marching Band Competition Series. Organizers are seeking former Lake Band alumni who are interested in participating as a performer or guest. They are eager to locate and communicate with original members of the 1952 Lake Band.

Lake Band began under the direction of George Cerwin as a way to extend Burdick Elementary School’s music education program during summer breaks in 1952. The band was active as a competitive marching, concert, and parade band until the early 2000s. It established an award-winning legacy of musicians, educators, and enthusiasts.

“Lake Band was an integral part of our lives growing up, and it has left a musical legacy like no other. We want to continue to celebrate the friendship and the music that brought us all together, and we want the public to enjoy it with us,” said Mark Wrobel, former Lake Band drum major and reunion organizer.

Organizers want to collect Lake Band memorabilia for display, including pictures, uniforms, and other items of interest. They are also seeking testimonials about how Lake Band positively affected the lives of its members. Testimonials will be used as part of a living history project about the organization.

A collection of favorite Lake Band pieces has been selected for the concert. Former members of all skill levels are invited to participate. Some instruments will be available for use. Rehearsals will be held at Greendale High School, 6801 Southway, Greendale, Wisconsin: Saturday, May 12, 1pm; Monday, June 4, 7pm; Wednesday, June 13, 7pm; Saturday, June 16, 1pm; Monday, June 25, 7pm; and Friday, June 29, 6pm.

A reunion party will take place immediately aft the June 29 rehearsal at Ray & Dot’s Tap, 6351 W. Grange Ave., in Greendale.

This event is open to all Lake Band alumni, performers, and all others.

Color guard and rifle rehearsals have already begun. More information: Mik Erwin at lakebandreunion@gmail.com.

Sponsorships are available to help fund the reunion and to build a Lake Band Foundation to carry on the musical legacy. More information: Patty Pritchard Thompson (414) 403-8003 or  lakebandreunion@gmail.com.
