Bradford Beach gets Blue Wave certification
June 29, 2009
A $500,000 donation from MillerCoors and the work of more than 20 business and community groups paid off June 15 as Milwaukee County’s Bradford Beach received the prestigious Blue Wave certification.
According to the Snapshots of Philanthropy website, the MillerCoors money contributed toward algae removal, gull control, beachcombing equipment, the Blue Wave application fee, and $25,000 annually for five years to UWM’s Great Lakes WATER Institute for Bradford water quality monitoring.
“People are once again enjoying Bradford Beach because of the efforts of so many partners,” said County Executive Scott Walker. “The Blue Wave certification is a wonderful honor for everyone involved.”
According to the Clean Beaches Council website, the Blue Wave program is the first national environmental certification for beaches. The Blue Wave certification process is designed to help maintain robust, healthy, and vibrant beaches. In Wisconsin, Bradford joins three Blue Wave beaches in the Apostle Islands and one other in Racine.
The Compass reported on the WATER Institute’s research at Bradford Beach in the July 2008 issue.

Could you please add that the Snapshots of Philanthropy website is from the Donors Forum of Wisconsin?
It was a series of 30 profiles the Donors Forum of Wisconsin wrote offering a glimpse into the many ways grantmakers are making a difference in communities through starting, expanding, sustaining, or partnering with critical initiatives and organizations.
The website where a link can be found to this particular snapshot on the work with MillerCoors and Bradford Beach is http://www.dfwonline.org/page10000532.cfm
