Bauman recommends pedestrian, bike linkages in any Hoan redo

June 29, 2009

Fourth District Milwaukee Alderman Robert Bauman proposed June 19 that the city impose conditions on any changes to the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge.

Last year, Wisconsin Department of Transportation alarmed local politicians and commuters by announcing they were looking at converting the Hoan into an at-grade boulevard with a moveable bridge over the Milwaukee River, with the intention of saving money on Hoan repairs and freeing up nearby land for economic development.

Bauman ups the ante in this discussion by proposing that any changes to the bridge meet certain city criteria, including adding a bicycle lane and pedestrian sidewalk in each direction.

Bauman plans to introduce his file at the July 7 Common Council meeting, where he anticipates it will be referred to the Public Works Committee.
