Groundwork Milwaukee, Inc., and the National Park Service’s Rivers & Trails Program are hosting an open house to gather public opinion from the community on proposed concept plans for three trail heads along the yet to be constructed Kinnickinnic River Trail. This spring public workshops were held to collect ideas to incorporate into the design for each of the three trailheads located at Maple Street + Kinnickinnic Avenue, Lincoln Avenue + First Street, and Rosedale Avenue and Sixth Street.
The City of Milwaukee purchased the abandoned train corridor in 2001 and obtained federal funds to construct the project. Originally planned to have been constructed years ago, the paving project has been delayed in the design review process. Because the City has no funding to neither design nor build trail head amenities such as benches, signs, or site-related art, our groups have been compelled to collaborate in engaging the public to help define the trail head designs and seek funding for implementation. The trail head design process was funded in part by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources River Protection Planning Grant and We Energies through the Wisconsin Energy Corporation Foundation.
The 2.25-mile trail, which lies adjacent to an active railroad and then the Kinnickinnic River, will connect the Fifth Ward with communities such as Bay View and Lincoln Village. The trail head amenities will serve multiple purposes including making the trail more visible from the street to help increase awareness about its existence, increase interest in and use of the trail, and to help interpret the area’s resources.
